High School Vacations?

Individual school districts can determine their own yearly calendar within guidelines set down by their state. The standard school year is 180 days plus additional In-Service days for the teachers, perhaps between 5 and 10. Some districts begin at the end of August and go until early June, with minimal vacations. Others may begin after Labor Day (first Monday in September) or perhaps as early as mid August and go until the end of June. Those districts may offer long breaks such as two or three weeks at Christmas, a week or two at Easter, and other long breaks. Still other schools (WITH air conditioning) may run a year-round school. They may offer four quarters a year and students must attend three of them, choosing which quarter to take as "summer" vacation. Some schools have gone to that due to overcrowding. Using that plan, only 3/4 of the student body is in school at any one time, with 1/4 off, resulting in smaller classes. There really is not a standard schedule anymore. We are no longer an agricultural society with children who need the summers off to work on the farm.
