Lateral Shoots and side branches which are which?

I was reading a diagram on pruning my goji berries and it talks about lateral shoots and side branches. What i would assume is the first branches that come off the trunk are the side branches and what comes off those are the lateral shoots. If anyone has an answer it would be much appreciated.
